New Year, Same Me

New year, same me??? Whaaat?

Yes, It’s true. Not much will change. This is reality….

I am trying to be more of a realist and realize that every year I put these far-fetched goals and dreams to start off the new year with. But in reality, they are too large and too challenging to crush all in one year.

I was once told by a wise woman (my mama), that you are who you are and you can’t change those parts about you that make up YOU. Understanding and finally accepting that, there’s always ways to advance yourself, better yourself, and strive for more. THOSE are the goals you should try to conquer. Setting yourself up to fail is most likely why people keep repeating those yearly goals… making these intentions more accessible and straightforward will give you better outcomes!

Also, setting short-term goals vs. long-term goals may work better for you and your lifestyle. This is more tangible and less stress on yourself to accomplish. Smaller can equal to quicker results, vs. larger and longer results. For instance, you want to lose 15 pounds this year… some say, easy peasy, while others might need to break it down smaller and set a goal such as each month you want to try loosing 1-2 lbs per week/month. This creates a more reasonable goal for yourself, with less stress and worry. More achievable than looking at the bigger picture, at least in my opinion!

Overall, whatever you do decide, or not decide to do in 2018, they are your ambitions, nobody else’s, so do (or not do) it all for you!

What I find most helpful for me might not be what works for you, but the beauty of sharing one’s opinion is that it gives others suggestions on things to try. Might bring upon another great idea!

I’ve conducted my list of 2018 goals for myself and thought I’d share with y’all! These are things that I’ve been thinking about doing, or trying out, in hopes of spending my time more wisely and really doing the things that make me happy!

IMG_2158

  1. Read 1 book per month
  2. Work out 3 times a week
  3. Post on the blog 1 a week
  4. Try Whole30 Diet for 1 month
  5. Volunteer at animal shelter 1 a month
  6. Donate to good will every 6 months
  7. Make a budget chart each month
  8. Join a class (dance/photography)
  9. Complete a Coursera course
  10. Plan a trip

Looking at my list of 10 things, the difference for most on this list is that I’ve made them objectives vs. just goals. The difference between the two is that a goal is a description of a destination, and an objective is a measure of the progress that is needed to get to the destination. My objectives (1-7) are the short-term outcomes and my goals (8-10) are the long-term outcomes that I want to achieve. I find that objectives help me more with managing my overall goals. They are all goals but the more long-term are not as high on the list in that those are ongoing things that I can always try to do/work on. The first seven are things that I want to try to manage in a specific time slot.

I carry around a notebook that fits right inside my handbag and I write in it all day long. Whether its ideas, to-do lists, goals, and/or whatever else I think of during my day, it keeps me organized, detail oriented, and secure with everything going on inside my head. Making things more real once I write them down, I can never forget anything!

Processed with VSCO with f2 preset

What works for you? Do you have a technique to help you stay organized? I am a list writer, which helps me when wanting to prioritize what I want/need to get done. Everyone has their way of doing things, but the ultimate goal here (no pun intended) is to set those objectives and goals for yourself and be more of a realist when setting them. I would love to hear some of your 2018 goals! Keeping Austin Weird

I wish we could all live by this mantra!

Having never been, I had some expectations traveling to Texas. Stereotypes: 1. everyone will be wearing cowboy boots, 2. warm fall weather, 3. southern accents….. all proven WRONG!

This trip was extra special, visiting a high school friend along with another friend and all our mothers, a reunion of 20+ year old friendships. So really anything we did would have been fun, but I seriously don’t think we stopped laughing once!

There’s something to be said about people who you rarely see but can fall back into the friendship! It really was an amazing time, full of interesting food concoctions, beautiful scenery, and awesome company!

I wouldn’t say we did a lot of tourist activities, but we certainly saw the amazing attractions and views of Austin. Including the infamous bats that live within one of the bridges in the heart of it all. A morning spent at the JW Marriott Spa, another brunching at the legendary Torchy’s Tacos.

With not a lot of down time, since we were only there for 5 days, we were still able to capture these moments and cherish the quality time all spent together!

Just wanted to share some of these moments with Y’ALL 🙂

Until next time ❤

Shoes speak louder than words

I am totally guilty of making shoe contact sometimes before eye contact… it’s just naturally where my eyes are drawn.

I like shoes just as much as the next gal but recently, I’ve REALLY been into the sneaker trend. And not just the athletic kind, but the trendy kind like velvet and metallic details. I know what you’re thinking… how practical can those types of sneakers really be? Believe it or not, I’ve been shocked myself how much I’ve been wearing them! You just gotta get creative, and force those style juices to help you.

I will start with the Sam Edelman Marlow Velvet Sneaker. Right now these are out of stock on their site, but I’ve seen these pretty ladies in other colors on other sites like Nordstrom! Love this mauve color and of course the velvet with ribbon laces. What a combo.

IMG_1123.JPG

My other two awesome finds this season are both Steve Madden (he’s my boy). See below 🙂

Steve Madden’s daughter, him and me! (not sure where the camera was here clearly…)

Here is the Steve Madden Lancer Sneaker. I’ll always remember buying these as this was the purchase I made the day I met Steve. His business/design partner was walking around, talking to customers to see what we were buying. He sold me on this pair and I wish I could thank him! These are such great sneakers, both comfortable and trendy af.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Last but not least, the Steve Madden Sabrina Sneaker. Not finding this one on their site anymore as well, I found it being sold on Zulily, yay for discounts, #yourwelcome. Something about a white sneaker that just screams GET ME DIRTY, so this has been a challenge to myself, BUT what is great is the metallic detailing such as the side zipper (has no purpose at all) and big stars on the back side. IN LOVE.

What are your go-to shoes this season? I’d love to know! Like and leave some comments below 🙂

Until next time ❤

Rae’s Reads: September 2017

I can’t believe we just finished our first book! I have to say… I love being in a book club. Something about being able to discuss a book and dissecting each chapter, with people who also want to, is pretty refreshing!

I wanted to thank those who joined last month’s Rae’s Reads throughout the month of August! I had such a good time writing my weekly discussions and having some of you engage and be just as eager to see how the book ended. It made me happy to see you were enjoying it! This was my first book club choice, which could have been a hit or miss, but I think overall, everyone enjoyed the story and were happy to have read it!

I chose this month’s book based off of the NY Times Best sellers list, like last month’s, but this time, a genre I personally really enjoy… MYSTERY!!! I love suspenseful, turn pagers that get you wanting to solve the mystery before ever coming close to the end, it’s that intense! Just like movies, I feel like these types of books keep my attention and interest much more than any other genre, so why not try one this month! I was going to wait until October and get in the spirit of Halloween but I just couldn’t wait. PLUS, this book was just released… so…

For the month of September, we will be reading, “A Stranger in the House,” by Shari Lapena. Ugh, I literally cannot wait to read this as I’ve heard this is a suspenseful thriller you never want to put down! This New York Times best seller was released on August 15th of this year! 411KzVvtbEL._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_

I am a big fan of Shari Lapena and her first best-selling book, “The Couple Next door.” Another great thriller that left me wanting more. When I saw this book had just come out, it was a calling that we have to read it!!

Just to give a very brief summary, this book is about a suspicious accident, a wife who can’t account for herself and unsettling questions that threaten to tear a couple apart. A thriller packed full of secrets, and a twisty story that never stops… what else could you ask for?!

This book can be found in various forms and at various places. For those who enjoy a physical book in hand, you can find it on Amazon for $11.72 in paperback. Side note –> make sure to order this ASAP or run over to your nearest book store to get the book before we disuss on 9/8!) If you are like me and enjoy reading the e-book version on an iPad or Kindle, you can download the book, for $12.99. I actually really enjoy using my iPad because I can make side notes and highlight passages through each chapter. This really came in handy!

At this point, some of you might be wondering how they missed last month’s and how to join in on this month’s… well don’t you fret, there’s always room for more 🙂 During August, I explored using the website Goodreads (a free website for book lovers), and I felt that it was a pretty nice set-up and user-friendly! So I’m going to stick to using it again for this month’s book! For those of you who are interested in joining this month’s book club, you should definitely keep on reading than!

Here is the break-down in terms of how to join, what to expect, and how to stay connected!

  • If you do not have a Goodreads account, you can create one as well as become a member automatically, by clicking here. If you already have an account, you can click on the link as well, and it should direct you to the group page to become a member.
  • Once you are a member, feel free to play around on our group page, leave comments, questions, etc. and I will get a direct email and can respond to you.
  • I have created our first discussion board within the group, which you will be able to see once a member, titled “Welcome.”
  • Each week I will assign additional chapters, and this month, every Friday I will post in this group, on a discussion board, comments, questions, etc.
  • Feel free to read ahead as I am giving everyone the entire month of September to read and discuss. This will give everyone time to contribute in the discussion as well as catch up for the following week!
  • Feel free to talk about anything related to this book as no comment is wrong or right, but is your opinion. I like opinions, so please don’t hold back any of them!

Here are also some rules or guidelines, however you’d like to refer these as, for all of you, who are interested in joining in on all the fun this month!

  1. Follow each week’s discussion
  2. Keep up on the chapters
  3. Engage with us!
  4. Enjoy your set aside reading time

It’s not about how many people join in, or share in the weekly discussions, it’s about how each person feels after finishing a good read! I think a good books leaves the reader either wanting more, asking questions. That to me makes reading a book worth it. The nice part is that it creates time for yourself during your day to focus just on reading, and nothing else!

I have created a schedule for this book so nobody gets left behind! Like I said, feel free to read ahead, but make notes as you go so you can share your thoughts for each weeks discussion!

Mystery LetterpressWEEK 1 – 9/1 to 9/8: Chapters 1-12

WEEK 2 – 9/8 to 9/15: Chapters 13-25

WEEK 3 – 9/15 to 9/22: Chapters 26-36

WEEK 4 – 9/22 to 9/29: Chapters 37-49

This makes it easy for y’all to write down, put it in your phone calendar, whatever you gotta do to remember!

I am so excited to start this book and have more people join us in this moth’s Rae’s Reads!!!

Happy Reading 🙂

Rae’s Beauty Favs: Summer 2017

Where do I even begin?!!

I’ve been a little extra obsessed with beauty products this summer. Not sure if it’s because I’ve been following more beauty bloggers or watching makeup tutorials before falling asleep every night… all I know is I wake up wanting to try a new product. A very fun but expensive hobby, I have gradually encountered this hobby the past three months, without realizing just how addicting it is.

Whether it’s the newest makeup product released, or a new face serum, I want to try it all, read all the reviews, and find the best product for each category of beauty. I have become one of those people who not only benefit from those reward programs at Sephora and Ulta, but now get a coupon almost every week because of my weekly visits to one or the other. They just keep adding to my obsession and it’s getting a little bit crazy how many sample size products I now have in my bathroom…

On a better note, I have probably purchased just about every #favorite beauty product from this summer so I thought why shouldn’t I share 🙂

Let’s start with skin care since that comes before your makeup routine!

Because I’ve ranked up on points at Sephora, I chose to use my points towards one of the kits they usually have displayed at the registers. Totally take advantage of this to try new products!!! The kit I chose was of the brand Fresh. In the kit was the Soy Face Cleanser, the Rose Floral Toner, and the Rose Face Mask. So far, I’ve been using the face cleanser and the toner and LOVE them! I’m afraid though, due to the fact that the regular size products are not the cheapest things, that I’ll want them after I run out of the samples, but the quality is just so good! I’ve found that my skin is in better condition then the beginning of the summer and I’ve really been focusing on finding those products to invest in. (If you haven’t already, check out my post on skin care here). If your skin is not in the best condition, your makeup will not apply to the fullest or look as good as it can look! Skin comes first and once you master that, your makeup will look flawless without caking it on everyday, I promise!

Another product that I wanted to find was a serum that wouldn’t break the bank but was still good quality. I decided to go to Ulta for this with my roommate (shout out to Sabs!). We both were looking for a good serum to minimize pores, hydrate the skin, and overall heal any imperfections such as blemishes, redness, and dryness. We asked one of the specialists to help guide us in the right direction and she was more than willing to show us products of all price ranges, and even supply samples of some (even the expensive ones)!!

Clinique-Moisture-Surge-Hydrating-Supercharged-Cocnentrate-160

I’ve been experimenting with two samples, both of which I really like, not finding a huge difference in the two, other than the price, and I plan on buying the regular size bottle after I finish the sample (since writing this post, I already went out and bought it)! Between the Lancome Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Serum and the Clinique Moisture Surge Hydrating Supercharged Concentrate, I prefer Clinique’s only because of the price difference, much more affordable!

Now we are ready to talk makeup! This is where I’ve done the most research, to find the perfect product, for that specific need.

2513749My most recent love is the Two Faced Hangover 3-In-1 Replenishing Primer & Setting Spray. It’s a coconut water-infused mist that primes, sets and refreshes makeup while it helps keep skin hydrated, what’s better than that?! It really does help keeps my makeup in place all day.

Then I’ve been using the classic Benefit Goof Proof Brow Pencil Easy Shape & Fill, in the color 4 medium. This was actually not what I used to use because I didn’t intiallty like it a few years ago.  I then found that I was using the wrong color all along and that is why it didn’t look good! Easy fix. Brows are a new art form and if you’re using the wrong color it can do wonders…. find your shade and stick with it!

2304330fabfitfun-fall-2016-13

Next, of course a brow gel to get those eyebrows staying fabulous all day long! I’ve been loving the brow gel that was in the FabfitFun Fall 2016 box called The BrowGal Eyebrow Gel by Tonya Crooks. It acts almost as a hairspray for your brows.

POREfessional Face PrimerOnto primer! Recently I purchased some great Benefit products, including their POREfessional Face Primer. Let’s just talk about the smell… it’s amazing. I’m into scents so I appreciate a good scented makeup product! It’s a translucent primer to set your makeup and minimize the appearance of your pores. So far, I’ve been liking this one.

Foundation – creates an even, uniform color to the complexion, and to cover flaws. You better find the best one for your skin people! Take the actual name of this type of makeup, FOUNDATION – an underlying basis or principle for something, such as the rest of your makeup. Along with the setting spray and primer, this sets your face up to look flawless! I’ve tried many, MANY versions, powder, liquid, cream, and I find what works for my skin type the best is a liquid foundation. I have a combination of both dry and oily skin, depending on the time of year, and I find that regardless, a powder version just dries me out and makes my face look cakey. The nice part about using a liquid is that you create a dewy look and sometimes that may look oily, but then you can layer it with the right bronzer powder to create a more subtle dewy, yet pressed finish. So for my newest find, I went drugstore brand. I know a lot of people would disagree with me and say to invest your money in a more expensive foundation, but for summer, I find that when I am tan, I don’t use the same shade all year round, therefore, why spend the money for three months, vs. another shade I would use for the other seven? That’s a better investment in my mind.

fabfitfun-fall-2016-13This summer, my newest fav is the L’ORÉAL True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous Foundation. It’s a medium to full coverage liquid foundation, 40% pure water for all day hydration. Antioxidants vitamins C and E to improve clarity and skin tone. Love it!!

c5c3edc5-a151-4d8c-b9a0-a28b645dfde9_1.5f77bff03e7a957c054a1ce828d3639f

I then use a sponge to blend. This summer though, I heard that EcoTools came out with a duo-pack called the Perfecting Blender Duo, including a normal size blender and a smaller one, for under-the-eyes and detail work. Love these because they have a straight edge to get into those creases or tight corners around your nose and hair-line.

2eeb44d7-12e9-4bcd-ae36-c90888ac2484_1.7e6ded5c2bd9c69ed6277347eb9f4bd4

Onto the concealer of the year…. Tart Shape Tape to the rescue! This concealer has been used in every beauty bloggers makeup tutorial within the last 6 months on YouTube. Full coverage, lasts all day, and a million shades to choose from. An exclusive, only at Ulta!Tart Shape Tape

Next, I use a translucent setting powder. I love this stuff. Not sure what I was doing before this, but I can expect ZERO shine, (unless of course I create it using a highlighter). The one I’ve been using and loving is actually a drug store find as well. NYX is my new-found love. Seeing bloggers brag about their translucent powder, I just had to try it!Studio Finishing Powder Translucent Finish

The NYX Studio Finishing Powder Translucent Finish is great for “baking” under the eyes and around the t-zone areas. You don’t need to “bake” though when using this product. It’s light enough to loosely use all over the face if you wanted to!

Bye Bye Pores Pressed Anti-Aging Finishing Powder

Speaking of all over the face, I sort of have a heavy hand, so using a translucent  loose powder all over scares me… So I found another great find, a translucent compact powder by It Cosmetics called Bye Bye Pores Pressed Anti-Aging Finishing Powder.

Personally, I am a bronzer gal, and I love having that natural, warm summer glow all year round. This is probably the one product that I am always buying more of only because sometimes I want shimmer, while other days I want a more matte finish. Right now, the two bronzers that I’ve been loving are the BECCA Sunlit Bronzer which has a shimmer undertone and the Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer, which is matte. I sometimes use both, and use the Hoola bronzer all over the face and then if I’m feeling a little bit of contouring, I’ll use the Sunlit bronzer for a slightly darker shade and shimmer look!

I’ve actually been using the same blush for a couple of years now. The Physicians Formula Argan Wear Blush. Yes, drugstore, but I wasn’t that big into the blush factor until recently. I think because I have naturally rosy cheeks, I never wanted to wear blush. But I have come to realize that if you don’t include some color other than a brown, you will look like a sun 🙂Argan Wear Blush

I have found a new love though in the BECCA X Chrissy Teigen Glow Face Palette and have been using the blush in that as well! I also use this for highlighter too, when I want a more natural, everyday glow. This is actually my first ever contour palette I’ve ever purchased, which was in the beginning of June, so I’m pretty far behind in terms of my palettes, but hey, at least I got one! I only recently started getting into contouring, mainly because I didn’t know how. YouTube is amazing, let’s just say that!s1937846-main-Lhero

When I am going out on the weekends or to a special occasion, I like using the palette, but mixing it with the original, and first highlighter I’ve ever purchased, the Two Faced Candlelight Glow Highlighting Powder Duo. I love this one because it is a little more pigmented than the palette, which allows for a more intense glow-look!Candlelight Glow Highlighting Powder Duo

I go back and forth on wearing eyeliner for an everyday look, but when I choose to, I always go for a blue liner. I have dark brown features, so using a black or even a dark brown makes my eyes look small and heavier. Blue is a color known to compliment brown feature. I was using the Make Up For Ever Kohl Pencil for literally forever! Then my mom recommended a new, and lighter blue liner to try, which got some great reviews due to its easy-to-wear application! The Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner is the perfect, soft pencil, that lasts all day long and doesn’t smudge or run! Love this so much 🙂

My next favorite and would never leave the house without it… MASCARA! Probably my favorite product in makeup to wear. And the most difficult to find, might I add. I did find a great one that I still would use, but I found it’s long lost (younger) sister, which works just as good! I used to use the Two Faced Better Than Sex Mascara which is AMAZING, don’t get me wrong. But I recently found some bloggers comparing it to the newest L’ORÉAL Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara. At a $13 difference, this new mascara looks and feels just like the Two Faced one, lucky me!

Depending on my day, a typical eye look will consist of a little liner, mascara, and then some eye primer and a light shadow color. Nothing too intense, especially for my day time look.Sin Eyeshadow Primer Potion.jpg

The eye primer is an oldie but a goodie. I think I’ve had the same one since high school… but that shows you that a little goes a long way. The Urban Decay Sin Eyeshadow Primer Potion is a shimmer primer that can either act as a shadow on its own or keeps eye shadow from creasing during the day. Some days I use the primer as is or I use the Urban Decay Naked Basics. A great combination of everyday matte colors, this little palette includes all the basics you’d ever need!

My lip gloss would be poppin’ if I wore lip gloss, but I’m more of a lipstick kind of girl! My favorite lipsticks are hydrating ones, which believe it or not, are hard to find. I have found that the company Bite Beauty has high-impact lipsticks with extreme moisture, soft texture, and a creamy wear. It’s called the Amuse Bouche Lipstick.Bite-Beauty-Amuse-Bouche-Lipstick

I also enjoy using just a hydrating colored lip balm like the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15. I got this in a gift set early June and love it!Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15

I really have enjoyed using all these products the last couple of months. I have found a new love for makeup and just like searching for that perfect ballet flat, finding the perfect beauty product is just as challenging yet rewarding! I have recently found so much pleasure in learning more and more about the application process and following beauty bloggers that I decided to take on my own “beauty journey” and signed myself up for two awesome beauty subscriptions.ipsy

The first is by the company Ipsy, which you receive a Glam Bag every month for only $10 and with that, you get five new products to try, in all different categories of beauty/skin care, and the best part? The glam bag is a different cosmetic bag every month, to carry all your new products in! Such a great concept!

The second is Play! by Sephora. Also a monthly subscription for only $10, this one is guaranteed five deluxe samples (plus a fragrance bonus) all in a collectible bag!september-2016-Sephora-Play-review-and-unboxing-3-of-3

For an investment of $20, I get these two shipments monthly, full of beauty samples to try! This is a great way to test out new products, along with maybe trying something you’d never consider on your own. Good sizes for traveling, and also a perfect gift to sign up someone else to get!

But wait, that’s not all…. I also am still subscribed for the seasonal FabFitFun boxes! This subscription is ultimately my favorite due to the pure fact that everything comes in full-size bottles and there’s always something I can’t live without, go figure?! fabfitfun-box-spoilers

All of these subscription are great with their personal touches. Each website has thorough beauty/lifestyle quizzes for your personal preferences and taste. This makes you feel that you are going to receive the best choices for your personal lifestyle. I love that about these.

So that’s my rant on this summer’s favs! Keep a look out for more of Rae’s Favs, a monthly blog post consisting of whatever I’m feeling like writing about that month!

Like always, please leave any comments and/or questions and I will gladly respond within 24 hours! I love hearing from you all and sharing my personal favs!

Stay beautiful! XOXO Rae

Welcome to Rae’s Reads!

Hey book worms… ready for a summer book club? Well, whether you’ve been reading since you learned how, or haven’t picked up a book since you’ve learned how, now is your chance to join in on the fun of a club… but for books! (cricket, cricket), #awkward.

I know what you’re probably thinking… who has time for that? Why would I start now? It’s summer time, why read when I can do probably anything else? I get it, I’ve been there and have asked all those questions. I actually am usually that person to never pick up a book, but when I do… I get in these weird phases of actually enjoying good books. Shocking right?! When a book is that good, you can’t help but get into it. If not now though, when? Reading is good for the soul, and to be honest, why sit on a beach empty handed when you could have a good book infront of you!

It’s also nice to have a set time in your busy day to just read. I blame my commute not being two hours anymore…what’s your excuse? I used to read through books like they were magazines, one series after another, until I moved two months ago (stay tuned for a DIY apartment on a budget post), and well, that ended and I switched over to Netflix original shows (read about how I now have an obsession here). I now have to find the time to fit reading into my schedule… such a buzz kill right… But I actually find it soothing, sometimes too soothing, that I tend to fall asleep.

These are probably the worst types of readers. The ones (like me) that read two pages and pass out like a baby, only to wake up and realize that you don’t remember anything you read the night before. I end up re-reading majority of book over and over again. This is why it takes me a while to get through them. This is also why you should set time for yourself  during the day. For me, reading at night is the worst. Maybe there’s a quiet part of your day (before you get into bed) that you can find some “me” time and sit down with a good book. Better yet, join me in the first ever book launch of “Rae’s Reads!”

Can you tell how excited I am?!! I’m finally dedicating a portion of my blog for such a thing and it feels so adult like. #Adulting.

I welcome you to the launch of my first ever book related post! I thought “Rae’s Reads” suited this type of club, since its focus is not just on fashion, but on other common topics. Some thrillers, romance, maybe even some memoirs, depending on how crazy we wanna get! This months pick was chosen mainly because it includes a wide variety of different topics within this one book. It seems that this book created some buzz and focuses on family and relationship dynamics. Who can’t relate to that?

I also wanted to choose a book that has been on the best sellers list this summer, as this is already a good judgement of the book. So y’all ready for the big reveal…..

For the month of August, we will be reading “The Vacationers,” by Emma Straub. This New York Times best seller was interestingly published back in 2014 and has only now reached the best sellers list! Perhaps a change of heart? We shall find out!

vacationersThis book of family drama takes place in Manhattan. Of course this book wouldn’t be called “The Vacationers” though, if they only stayed in one place… So the Post family, Jim, Franny, and 18-year-old Sylvia jet set to the beautiful Spanish island of Mallorca for a two-week vacation. Staying in a large rental house, they meet up with their older son, 28-year-old Bobby, his girlfriend Carmen, Franny’s best friend Charles, and Charles’s husband Lawrence. Sylvia is a short time away from leaving home for Brown University and Jim as recently lost his job of thirty years at a local magazine.

You can already sense a diverse group of people about to be in a house together for two weeks…. I can feel the drama coming!

Just to give you a little sneak peek inside the ‘irresistible Post family drama of secrets, joys, and jealousies that rise to the surface over the course of a two-week stay in Spain.’ I think this is a #winning book and I cannot wait for y’all to get started!

This book can be found in various forms and at various places. For those who enjoy a physical book in hand, you can find it on Amazon for $9.58 in paperback. If you are like me and enjoy reading the e-book version on an iPad or Kindle, you can download the book, for $9.99.

For this first month’s book, I wanted to try out using Goodreads, a free website for book lovers. Imagine it as a large library that you can wander through and see everyone’s bookshelves, reviews, and ratings. You can also post your own reviews and keep track of what you have read, are currently reading, and plan to read in the future. It’s an awesome website, that if you don’t already have an account, you’ll be thanking me later!

I will be using this site for the month of August to see how it works for us! Now, this may be your first book club, just like this my first time hosting a book club. It will be a trial and error for both you and I so please hang in there, as I’m also exploring the best way to go about this for everyone! I find that trying new things can be terrifying yet rewarding when the end result is positive. On that note, here are some rules or guidelines, however you’d like to refer these as, for all of you, who are interested in joining in on all the fun this month!

  1. Follow each week’s discussion
  2. Keep up on the chapters
  3. Engage with us
  4. Enjoy your set reading time

Here are also some details of the break-down in terms of how to join, what to expect, and how to stay connected!

  • If you do not have a Goodreads account, you can create one as well as become a member automatically, by clicking here. If you already have an account, you can click on the link as well, and it should direct you to the group page to become a member!
  • Once you are a member, feel free to play around on our group page, leave comments, questions, etc. and I will get a direct email and can respond to you!
  • I have created our first discussion board within the group, which you will be able to see once a member, titled “Chapters 1-3: Welcome.”
  • Each week I will assign additional chapters, and every Thursday, I will post in this group, on a discussion board, comments, questions, etc.
  • Feel free to read ahead as I am giving everyone the entire month of August to read and discuss. This will give everyone who has joined, the weekend, to contribute in the discussion as well as catch up for the following week’s talk!
  • Feel free to talk about anything related to this book as no comment is wrong or right, but is your opinion. I like opinions, so please don’t hold back any of them!

Whether you enjoy this book, or have a hard time staying awake, what makes a book great is the discussion that happens during and after. That is the reason for this book club, to get people reading, talking and thinking outside their comfort zone. Why you ask? Well because…why not?!!

Happy Reading 🙂
