The definition of regimen, ever look it up?
Regimen; a prescribed course of medical treatment, way of life, or diet for the promotion or restoration of health.
THESE are the four daily regimens to live by. At least in skincare that is.
Swear on my loofah that if you do these four steps each day and night, you will see changes! I really believe that if you take care of your skin, only good things will come your way. You will look good, feel good, and it will show! Now I know that everyone has all different types of skin, different textures, skin pigmentation, oily, dry, and other variations of things, BUT taking care of your skin is essential for everybody and every type of skin.
Maybe the products will vary or additional steps will be needed, but if you really want to get serious about skin care and treat your skin the right way, there is a formula to do so, you just have to follow the steps!
For us women, makeup is a HUGE part of our daily lives. Some of us use makeup every day and some only when they go out. But the reality is, after a certain age, makeup can play a major role when getting older and we tend to use more and more to cover up those dark circles from lack of sleep, using those thick concealers for all sorts of nonsense on our faces. Now I want you to really think about all those makeup products used on your face each day… now what do you do before bed? Do you just go to sleep? Or take it off the next morning to refresh for another face of makeup? What do you do?? This is a pretty important question…The worst thing you could do is go to bed with any kind of makeup left on that poor face of yours that just needs some time to breathe!!!
This is the utmost important thing to take away from this blog post; do not EVER go to sleep with makeup still on! Even if you are just using a makeup wipe, just take it off!! Those pores of yours can’t handle all that!
“One night of sleeping in your makeup is unlikely to cause long-lasting damage to your skin,” says Dr. Schweiger, a well-renowned dermatologist from Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. “However, each night you sleep in your makeup, your pores become more clogged. Eventually, this can result in the formation of a microcomedone, which attracts the acne-causing bacteria to your pores.” BOOM. Who wants acne?? NOBODY!
So now that I‘ve yelled at you for sleeping with your makeup on, here comes your needed regime that will forever change your skin!
First off, makeup removers… what are you using? I absolutely love wipes. Depending on the kind you like, they can either be great or not so great. I LOVE the No 7 Beautiful Skin Quick Thinking Wipes, which you can always find at Target! These are larger, softer, and thicker than any of the other ones I’ve used. But I would still recommend: Simple Micellar Makeup Remover Wipes, Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes, and Garnier Nutritioniste Nutri-Pure Detoxifying Wet Cleansing Towelettes. All great.
So now let’s start with our first step: CLEANSE.
First things first: Why use cleansers? Well… it’s an essential when you wake up and go to bed. Cleansers unclog pores, remove dirt and oil and have extra benefits such as acne prone, softer skin, etc. It’s called getting fresh from all the “extras” such as makeup, moisture, and sweat from the day and/or night and removing all the bad stuff!
What types of cleansers are there? There are oil cleansers, foaming cleansers, skin smoothing cleansers, cleansing gels, wipes, and pads that will all do the trick. My favorite though are the lotion cleansers which I use every day in the shower, (First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Face Cleanser). BUT I also use a liquid toner the days that I don’t want to shower until the following day so I wash my face instead and use the toner in addition to a cleanser (Neutrogena Alcohol Free Toner). Some cleansers I recommend are: Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser, Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser, and Clean & Clear Morning Burst Facial Cleanser which can all be found at Target (my favorite store obviously).
Next step: EXFOLIANTS.
Pep up your skin and exfoliate 2-3 times every week. This will rejuvenate your skin by removing dead skin cells, revealing the healthy ones underneath.
You might be thinking who has the time for that? But you’ll be thanking yourself when your skin starts to feel oh so soft and oh so silky just from two times exfoliating in one week! Oh, and forget about getting acne (at least for that week).
There are a ton of different types of exfoliates, so just make sure you are reading the ingredients of these and if you don’t know what something is, chances are, like food, you probably shouldn’t use it…. And not eat it, lol.
*Remember* your body, inside and out, is your holy temple, why would you want to insert or put anything bad near or in it…think about that!? “Through exfoliation, dulling skin cells are effectively removed and newer cells are revealed for a fresher, healthier appearance.” My suggestion is to use a very light type like Simple Exfoliating Facial Wipes twice a week just to keep your skin cells from dulling!
Next Step: TREATMENTS
Before you moisturize, do an extra-personal step a day. Using treatments that address specific needs truly are useful and can help with results if used correctly. Dried skin, acne, dark circles, puffiness, anti-aging, firming, etc. are all examples of taking care of your own personal skincare. Face, eyes, and lips are the top three factors when taking care of specifics and all have excellent regimens within themselves that can overall help your own personal concerns. For your face, try using serums, which are lightweight formulas that sink in deep to tackle specific skin concerns and can smooth/firm, reduce discoloration, plump skin, minimize wrinkles, and quench dryness. All very important things to tackle!
I recently found out that serums can help with dryness on your face and after a week of using First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Hydrating Serum. I was amazed with the results. NO MORE DRY SKIN! Once I ran out of that though, I bought No 7 Protect Perfect Intense Beauty Serum, found at, you know it, Target, duh! I also have been using the night serum Skin Laundry California Restoring Night Serum, which brightens dark spots, evens your skin tone and texture, as well as tightens and boosts collagen. This serum contains a powerful combination of antioxidants, vitamins, amino acids and natural extracts that work together to help protect, repair and resurface skin. The perfect night combo! Side note: This was actually in the FabFitFun Fall 2016 box and I LOVE how it makes my face feel in the mornings!
As for your eye treatment… this one’s a biggie for me. I suffer from major dark circles under my eyes. Lack of sleep? Probably, but I have always had them and use concealer like it’s going out of style. I’m always looking for a brightener or anti-dark circles solution so when I saw Clinique Pep-Start Eye Cream in an InStyle Magazine ad, I just had to try it. Believe it or not I have seen some minor changes, but what I think really works for me is the Clinique All About Eyes Reduces Puffs Circles Cream. Between using the pep-start cream every morning and then using the anti-puffiness cream combined has decreased my dark circles than anything else I’ve tried.
Lastly, your lips… If you happen to have constant chapped lips (especially during the winter) you should NOT be using anything BUT a hydrating lip moisturizer. I fell for the Chapstick Total Hydration 3 in 1 Lip care balm, full of moisture and scents! But if you are also like me and need a daily lipstick go-to, I highly recommend using only hydrated lip stick brands such as BITE Beauty. The specific one I use is called Amuse Bouche Lipstick. This line of lipstick has hydrating formulas that are infused with food-grade ingredients, making them taste not so bad either!
Last Step: MOISTURIZE
Always, always, ALWAYS moisturize!!! A must-do, day and night after cleansing and treating your skin concerns. This will keep your skin from drying out and that your skin cells stay healthy, which is the most important. There are many types of moisturizers, but stick to a specific face one, which will have a more concentrated formula of ingredients because it has been made specifically to be put onto your face, which is a sensitive part of the body. Once you figure out a face moisturizer, there will then be many options in terms of treatments. This may not be the ultimate goal if you already have specific treatment creams. You may just want a moisturizer to keep from drying out your face!
I use First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream, which is super hydrating and allows my face to feel moist and fresh both day and night. Some other face moisturizers I recommend are: Pond’s Dry Skin Cream Facial Moisturizer if you are suffering from dried skin like I do in the colder months, and also Garnier Nutritioniste Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream to keep it moist all day/night long. Some moisturizers are for oily skin, dry skin, or a combination/all types of skin. This, I highly recommend: Neutrogena oil-free Facial Moisturizer and offering different types depending on your skin type. I do NOT recommend using any body butters or scented lotions on your face. There are many ingredients that can create even more dryness, sensitivity, and reactions, causing bumps, rashes, and irritation which you do not want.
For the rest of my body, I am very conflicted when it comes to this… I feel like I’ve tried every type of body butter, lotion, moisturizer, you name it, I’ve used it. But every year, after visiting the dermatologist, they stress how important it is to keep your skin protected and healthy. No scent will ever be worth damage to your skin. So, being a good girl, I have found a great lotion that is lightweight and has an amazing, long lasting feel to your skin! Eucerin Advanced Repair Lotion lasts up to 48 hours and is good for all skin types.
So there you have it! The four regimens to now live by if you aren’t already! The products I have listed are ones I have all personally tried and currently use. I would never recommend something if I have never tried it. I really enjoy skincare and think that it is one of the most important things a person can control. Like I’ve said before though, everyone’s skin differs and some people are just prone to certain things genetically, while others are blessed and can wear their makeup every single night to sleep and never experience any skin issues. But if you are neither or just want to make a healthy change for your skins sake, try these products, and see if you see a change. I can promise that at least one of these products will improve your skin!
You should always research for the best products out there for your specific needs. You don’t know how many times I’ve stood in the moisturizing aisle at Target googling the best ______ at a drug store. I’m telling you, do the research! Find out what is the best thing for your buck and try it.
Please comment with any questions you may have regarding skincare! I am always happy to hear and share skin remedies and tips on what to do for certain situations.
