This is the time of year when people are happier, the sun shines longer, and skin becomes a few shades darker. It’s my favorite time of year. This is the time when you get to relax on the weekends doing “outdoor activities,” like hiking, swimming, and wineries. All my favorites! But my most favorite thing to do is wake up as early as 7:00 a.m., throw on my bathing suit, a cover-up, grab the sunscreen, and drive the hour and 45 minutes to the perfect destination…the beach…aka my happy place.
There’s something to be said about a beach town. Whether you rent/own a home at the beach every summer, or play tourist for the day, beach towns are like mini vacations, welcoming and quaint. Most beach towns are known for something. Like their restaurants, or their boardwalks, but really, it’s the whole package that does it for me.
My perfect day is spending it on the beaches, with sandy hair, and an ice cream cone! What’s better… honestly? If you’re not a beach person, by all means, this is NOT your perfect day, but for me, I could do this everyday and be perfectly content.
I love playing the ultimate “tanning game” that everyone seems to do. Laying on my beach towel, thinking I am all set because I applied SPF 30 about three times during my 5 hour tan session, that I will not burn, and I end up red as a lobster, as crispy as a piece of toast. We’ve all been there, and will learn eventually that sunscreen is our friend!
The most significant part for me, is when you finally are rested, laying on that towel with the sun beaming down, the little breeze from the water with the sound of the waves, there’s no place I’d rather be in that moment. I find that this is the most relaxing thing I could do for myself. It’s therapeutic in a sense that you really can’t be doing a whole lot while lounging on a beach. You can enjoy a good book, listen to some music, and enjoy a cold beverage, but really, when you close your eyes, you are just there in that moment, being mindful that this is where you are right now, no where else. That is what I love about being on a beach. It creates this situation for you. A relaxing situation you can take full advantage of and for a good amount of time if you start early!
I hope all of you get to enjoy a beach day like this. Mindfulness is a very hard concept nowadays with the on-going, fast-paced environment everyone is in. Look at the beach as a getaway from reality, and the opportunity to only be in the moment. Especially if you do this weekly like I try to. I find it so important that no money spent or long drive will ever be too much for me to spend just one day of my week being mindful on a beach with a friend by my side, enjoying it with me!
